"The Romero Group want to stiffle us with a judicial order" |

The Regional Director of Agriculture, Antonio Arce García, stated in a newspaper interview that the Romero Group is attempting to stiffle his authority for having ordered a suspension of the activities of planting palm oil in hundreds of hectars deforested by the same company. The company has put in a penal accusation for “abuse of authority”. “They’re taking that action since I’ve affected their interests. But they won’t manage to stifle us”, sated Arce Garcia, “We expected this and we will reply as the law indicates”.
So the RAL is alert: we are seeing more symptoms of central government and business interests taking further steps towards favouring ( as the proposed new forestry law wishes to impose) a “change of use “ of the forest to favor agro fuel industries.

.PERU’S PROPOSED NEW FORESTRY LAW AND THE POWERFUL “ROMERO” GROUP |

As a proposed text for a new Forestry Law is published in Peru, including proposals that favour the “change of the use” of the forest to permit agrofuel plantations, the powerful Romero Group, closely linked to the President of the country, is denouncing the Regional Director of Agriculture in the Province of San Martín for his so-called “abuse of authority”. The Director had annulled the resolution that permitted the change of use of the forestry land where the business had set up oil palm plantations. Around the area of Barranquita the Romero Group have deforested a municipal conservation area, entered title lands of third parties and are reported to deforest 20 hectars of forest every day causing serious problems of lack of water in the streams that the local population depend upon. A draft version of Peru’s new Forestry Law is already out. Only 5 months remain before Peru has to comply with all the conditions required in the Forestry Addendum of the Free Trade Agreement signed with the USA; and the Lacey Act in the States has now been widened to include heavy sentences for those who import illegal wood into the USA.
Given this new panorama the RAL, with the support of TRAFFIC and the Environmental Investigation Agency is organizing an event this Friday in Iquitos to debate the new situation.

RAL ORGANISES “PEOPLE’S FORUM” ON FUTURE OF THE FOREST |
|
|
|
Monday, 25 January 2010 18:04 |
|
One of the first fruits of starting the Movement “Forests for ever” has been the decision to coordinate with other groups and individual san people’s Forum on the future of the forest. It will be held on Tuesday 26th January in the Maloca of Caritas in Punchana, in Iquitos. We hope to have the presence of natives, river dwellers, industrial timber dealers, academics. The government is about to publish a new forestry law and we fear for the worse. In the invitation sent out we warn: “We have no doubt that the new law will once again favor export of raw material; that brings quick and fleeting benefit to a small group; and that it will produce more poverty for natives and river dwellers as well as leaving us with less resources than ever.”
The future will prove us right or wrong.
