A report by Matt Finer and Marti Orta-Martinez,
A rapid and unprecedented proliferation of oil and gas concessions threatens the mega-diverse Peruvian Amazon. That is one of the central conclusions from a pair of researchers who have, for the first time, documented the full history of hydrocarbon activities in the region and made projections about expected levels of activity in the near future. see more on Amazon Watch link:

Friday, 26 February 2010 23:55 |
RBEC Energy and Mines and the Regional Government organized the February 26, a Seminar on Biofuels. A good group of representatives from many institutions and civil society could spend an entire morning listening to presentations on the experiences with "bio" or "agro" fuels, the benefits, risks and trends. The space - as the first open space on the subject in the region has been valuable worse were many questions and doubts about the true intentions behind this push toward biofuels and the existence of a real energy policy in Loreto.

What happens when large multinational oil company in oil exploitation in the Amazon? We have received news of a new film that gives an assessment of environmental and social impacts experienced by indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon. Two Canadian scientists - Jena Webb (Ph.D. McGill University) and Nicolas Mainville (M.Sc. UQAM) - to investigate deforestation and pollution in the area since 2001, demonstrate how toxins enter the aquatic food chain and affecting fish-eating communities. The documentary, directed by Mauricio Delfin (Visual Reality), is the researchers during the last trip where they deliver the results to communities in the form of theater. MORE CONTAMINATION BY PLUSPETROL |

While we were recovering from the terrible events in Bagua last year, Pluspetrol was hurrying to pull out of its base in Bartra. Why ? We don’t know. But what is certain is that they have left behind one more environmental disaster.
The local people who have observed the scene speak of a mess both within the abandoned base as well as in streams and lakes.
The most visible contamination is in the Montano stream. Travelling down this stream for the 4 hours it takes to get to the Tigre River the contamination is clear to the eye.
We invite Pluspetrol’s executives and shareholders in Houston, Argentina or Holland to visit the area and compare what they see with the poetic statements the company publishes about respect for nature and the local communities.
The contaminated waters flow out into the Tigre River at a point between the San Juan and Vista Alegre villages. Everyone downstream from this point is affected by the contamination. The river Tore flows into the Marañon, passes Iquitos, and flows on through Brazil to the Atlantic.
The Red Ambiental Loretana (RAL) has formally requested the Fiscal’s office to investigate this latest threat and to publish the results of an inspection.
