As a proposed text for a new Forestry Law is published in Peru, including proposals that favour the “change of the use” of the forest to permit agrofuel plantations, the powerful Romero Group, closely linked to the President of the country, is denouncing the Regional Director of Agriculture in the Province of San Martín for his so-called “abuse of authority”. The Director had annulled the resolution that permitted the change of use of the forestry land where the business had set up oil palm plantations. Around the area of Barranquita the Romero Group have deforested a municipal conservation area, entered title lands of third parties and are reported to deforest 20 hectars of forest every day causing serious problems of lack of water in the streams that the local population depend upon.
